Yamashita Sekkei was awarded a project management consultancy contract for the Grand Egyptian Museum construction project. The project will build one of the world’s largest archeological museums in the Giza district, site of the three Great Pyramids, some 15 km southwest of Cairo. Heneghan Peng of Ireland was chosen from more than 2,200 applicants to be the lead architect. The facility will have a total floor area of 90,000 square meters and is expected to cost around 550 million dollars to build.
The Japanese government is helping with project funding by means of yen-denominated ODA loans, in the interest of bolstering the preservation, restoration, display, research, and education efforts regarding Egypt’s historical cultural assets. Japan is also covering part of the overall project cost toward further development of Egypt’s tourism industry and the creation of employment opportunities.
