The Miyazaki Prefectural Government Disaster Prevention Office Building was designed to be a disaster prevention center that will serve as a “focal point for cooperation among municipalities, the government, the Self-Defense Forces, fire departments, and other related organizations” in the event of a large-scale disaster such as the Nankai Trough Earthquake, which is predicted to occur in the future. We aimed to create a government building that is earthquake resistant, can maintain its functions even in the event of a lifeline failure, and is capable of long-term disaster response activities. At the same time, the building was designed to flexibly respond to changes in the times and organizational restructuring due to changes in administrative demands, and to excel in basic performance as a government building, such as universal design and environmental symbiosis. We aimed to create a landscape that would pass on the historical process of Miyazaki’s development to the next generation.
