Miyagi 3.11 Tsunami Disaster Memorial Museum

設計コンセプト

This is a plan for a Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park and National Memorial and Prayer Facility (tentative name) in Ishinomaki City, the largest disaster-stricken area in Miyagi Prefecture after the Great East Japan Earthquake, to serve as a place of mourning and to pass on the lessons of the disaster. The building layout was determined based on the landscape design intent of the “Plaza of Remembrance” and the “Place of Prayer” in the park and the surrounding land use. The “prayer space,” which consists of two ellipses and is encompassed by two mounds of landscaping, will create a new centripetal force in the site. In contrast, this facility is circular in shape, with the intention of showing the earthquake remains scattered in the surrounding area an omni-directional “face-to-face” presence. By placing this facility on the axis connecting the “place of prayer” and Hiyoriyama, we positioned this facility as the “second place of prayer” and Hiyoriyama as the “third place of prayer” to form a “prayer connection” to the entire region.
