Kumamoto Kenhoku Hospital is one of the few general hospitals in Japan that integrates a public hospital and a medical association hospital. The plan calls for greater efficiency and sophistication, as well as enhanced disaster preparedness. The first floor is a “one-floor outpatient area” that integrates outpatient functions, with an emphasis on safety and security for outpatients; the second floor is the supply section, and the third floor is the acute care section, with clearly separated flow lines. The “Komorebi Hiroba,” a three-story atrium located at the intersection of the east-west and north-south skeletal flow lines connecting the interior and exterior of the building, welcomes visitors with soft light from the light-membrane ceiling designed to look like abstracted sunlight filtering through the trees.
