Waseda University Building 11Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo

Concept

Planned as one the university's 125th anniversary projects, the building was designed with the aim of creating a new academic research environment while continuing to pass along the campus memories and traditions. We chose spatial elements and materials characteristic of the overall campus appearance in a design evocative of history. The entire high-rise building is linked together by continuous longitudinal lines created mainly by the fellowship spaces in each zone and escalators, in order to create a three-dimensional campus continuing from the outdoor space. On the inside of the history-evoking outside skin unfolds a cutting-edge research environment, resulting in a highly functional campus blending history and innovation.
